01 / Maths

How do you add ½ and ¼?

The denominator tells you the size of the pieces. Before adding, describe both fractions using pieces of the same size.

One half is two quarters: ½ = ²⁄₄. Now add the quarters: ²⁄₄ + ¼ = ¾. Keep the denominator at four because you are still counting quarters.

Your turn

What is ⅓ + ⅙? Write both fractions in sixths before adding.

Check your answer

⅓ = ²⁄₆, so ²⁄₆ + ⅙ = ³⁄₆ = ½.

Explain how to add fractions with different denominators. Show one example, then give me a similar question without revealing the answer.

What is photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is the process plants use to make glucose from carbon dioxide and water using light energy. Oxygen is also produced. Chlorophyll absorbs the light energy, and the process takes place in chloroplasts.

Carbon dioxide + water → glucose + oxygen
Light energy is needed for this reaction.

Your turn

Which two substances go into the reaction, and which two are produced?

Check your answer

Carbon dioxide and water are the reactants. Glucose and oxygen are the products. Light supplies energy; it is not a substance in the reaction.

A prompt to explore further

Explain photosynthesis at my course level. Ask me three questions to check my understanding, one at a time.

What is the difference between a metaphor and a simile?

Both make comparisons. A simile makes the comparison explicit, often with “like” or “as”. A metaphor describes one thing as another.

Simile: “The classroom was like a beehive.”
Metaphor: “The classroom was a beehive.”

Both suggest a busy, noisy classroom. In an essay, explain the effect of the comparison rather than only naming the technique.

Your turn

“Her voice was a warm blanket.” Is this a metaphor or a simile? What feeling does it suggest?

Check your answer

It is a metaphor. Describing the voice as a warm blanket suggests comfort, warmth or reassurance. Support your interpretation with the surrounding text when analysing a passage.

A prompt to explore further

Give me a short sentence containing a metaphor or simile. Let me identify the technique and explain its effect before you give feedback.
